Eskadron Saddle Pad – Experience in Everyday Use

A saddle pad needs to do significantly more than look good in the saddle. It should be ready to use quickly after being brushed, stay still under the saddle, reliably absorb sweat, and retain its shape even after many washes. That is exactly what Eskadron saddle pad experience in everyday use is all about: not just the color of the current collection, but functionality during training, hacking, lessons, and competitions.

For many riders, Eskadron is part of their essential basic equipment. This is due to the changing designs, but also to details such as quilting, cords, piping, undersides, and different cut shapes. Nevertheless, whether a saddle pad really suits the horse is only decided after a few rides—especially with horses that have a pronounced wither, a lot of movement in the saddle area, or sensitive skin.

Eskadron saddle pad experience in everyday use: What matters

In daily use, Eskadron saddle pads are particularly convincing when the model, size, and area of use match. A voluminous Glossy or Velvet saddle pad looks very high-quality on competition day and lies beautifully stable with a suitable saddle. For sweaty summer training, however, a breathable version with a functional underside can be the more practical choice.

Most models are neatly finished: cords and piping give the edge structure, the quilting usually remains shape-stable with proper care, and the girth loops help secure the position under the saddle. This is a particularly relevant point when mounting, cantering, or with young horses. A saddle pad that moves backward or builds tension at the wither not only looks untidy but can also impair comfort.

Eskadron offers dressage, eventing, and pony shapes depending on the collection. The shape should not be chosen based on your favorite color, but according to the saddle flap and the horse's back. Under a large-cut dressage saddle, a saddle pad that is too small quickly looks tight. With a compact eventing saddle, a very large model can, on the other hand, stick out to the sides and bring unnecessarily much material along when girted.

Fit under the saddle: The most important practical test

A good saddle pad does not lie flat on the wither. It is pulled up into the wither after being placed, so that a visible gap is created. Only then is the saddle placed on top. This small routine prevents pressure and ensures that the saddle pad fulfills its purpose instead of pulling forward under load.

In everyday use, Eskadron models usually prove to be comfortably shape-stable, provided the saddle is correctly fitted. However, they are no substitute for saddle fitting. If a saddle pad constantly slips, creates folds, or bunches up at the wither, the cause is not automatically the product. Often, an ill-fitting saddle, loops that are too loose or too tight, a round horse back, or an unruly girth area play a role.

For sensitive horses, it is worth taking a closer look at the underside. Cotton and blended fabrics often feel pleasant and are a proven choice for many horses. Technical undersides can distribute moisture better but react differently depending on the coat and care. Horses with very short summer coats or a tendency to get rubs benefit from a saddle pad that lies smoothly, is clean, and does not add unnecessary thickness.

Thickness, padding, and saddle feel

More volume does not automatically mean more comfort. A heavily padded saddle pad can soften small unevenness, but it also changes the space between the saddle and the horse. This can be problematic with a saddle that already lies tightly. This is why many riders choose a normally padded saddle pad for daily work and only use additional pads specifically.

For a horse with a well-fitting saddle, a high-quality saddle pad is usually completely sufficient as a protective layer. Anyone who uses correction pads, sheepskin, or gel pads should coordinate the combination with a saddler. The most beautiful Eskadron saddle pad must not impair the fit of the saddle.

Durability: What counts after many days in the stable

In everyday stable life, a saddle pad quickly comes into contact with sweat, dust, hair, and the saddle girth. With regular, sensible care, Eskadron saddle pads generally look good for a long time. However, dust and light horse hairs are particularly noticeable on dark colors. Brushing or vacuuming thoroughly before washing protects the washing machine and the material.

Durability depends heavily on how the saddle pad is washed and dried. A delicate cycle at a low temperature, closed Velcro, and a laundry bag protect cords, logos, and piping. Fabric softener should be avoided because it can impair the fibers and moisture management. After washing, air drying is the better solution than a hot dryer.

Models with a glossy surface, velvet look, or striking details require a little more attention than a plain cotton saddle pad. They are perfect companions for lessons, photos, or competitions, but are not necessarily the first choice for a wet hack. Anyone who wants to keep their equipment beautiful for a long time is best off separating everyday saddle pads from special favorite pieces.

Color and collection: Look good, stay practical

Eskadron is known for seasonal color combinations. This is fun, but can make the selection more complicated: Does the new set match the existing fly ears, bandages, and riding jacket? Everything does not have to be exactly the same shade for a harmonious look. A neutral base in black, navy, anthracite, or white can be combined very flexibly. A seasonal color then sets the accent.

For pony families and young riders, colored saddle pads are often particularly motivating. The size remains crucial here as well. A saddle pad that is too large can look unstable to the sides on small ponies or lie far behind the saddle. Pony cuts are therefore more than just a smaller look—they make it easier to achieve a proper, clean position.

In competition use, the requirements of the organizer and the respective association also apply. White or understated models are the safe choice for many competitions. During training, it can then be Velvet, Glossy, Mesh, striking cord, or a seasonal color.

Which Eskadron saddle pad suits which use?

For daily dressage work, dressage shapes with a sufficiently long flap area make sense. They should not become tight under the saddle and offer enough space to be pulled up into the wither. Eventing riders need a cut that suits the saddle flap pulled further forward. Anyone who jumps or goes off-road should additionally ensure that the saddle pad does not pull up at the back edges during movement.

On warm days, lighter, breathable models are often more comfortable. In winter, a slightly sturdier saddle pad is not automatically warmer for the horse but may take longer to dry with a thick coat and wet weather. This is why it is worth using at least two to three saddle pads in rotation. This way, each can air out completely and dry instead of being placed under the saddle again while damp.

For riders who train frequently, a combination of functional basic models and a special saddle pad for lessons or competitions is particularly useful. At Equestrian Loew, you can select specifically by cut, collection, color, and material without being dependent on a still-damp favorite model on the next stable day.

Small mistakes that cost comfort

Many problems are not caused by the saddle pad itself, but by habits. A dirty underside rubs more, loose loops promote slipping, and a wither area that is not pulled up can cause pressure. A saddle pad that is still damp in the closet after washing also loses its freshness more quickly.

Briefly check the position and sweat pattern after riding. Even moisture is usually unnoticeable, while dry pressure points or significantly slipped areas give cause to take a closer look at the saddle, girt, and pad. With recurring issues, professional advice is more important than buying an increasingly thicker pad.

An Eskadron saddle pad becomes a reliable everyday companion when it suits the saddle, the horse, and the actual use. Choose the shape and function first, then the material, and finally the color—then the new set will not only bring joy at the first photo but also after many completely normal stable days.
