This Trust bit is coated with Sweet Iron.
Sweet Iron develops surface rust when it comes into contact with (air) moisture, which tastes sweet and naturally stimulates salivation, making the horse accept the bit better.
Due to this rust development (oxidation), the blue color of the Trust bit changes to grey to brown. The sweet iron bit will form a thin orange-brown layer of rust on the mouthpiece when not in use for a while. This can be easily removed with a damp cloth.
